Eddies and Currents Sea Kayak Clinic - Deception Pass

Learn how to safely play and maneuver in fast moving current with eddies. Intermediate Kayak Course students have priority for this clinic.

  • Sea Kayak IV
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 6.0 nm
  • Maximum Wind: 15 kts
  • Maximum Waves: 2 ft
  • Maximum Currents: 5 kts
  • Pace: 3 kts

We will MEET at 9:00 am at the Bowman Bay boat launch in Deception Pass State Park.  A Discover Pass is required.

Have you been paddling in SK II/III conditions for awhile and want to improve your skills?  In this clinic, you can learn how to safely play and maneuver in areas of fast current (at least 4 kts) and eddy lines.

In this clinic we will be discussing and practicing: 1)  how to do eddy turns, 2)  how to paddle in whirlpools and boils, 3) how to eddy-hop against a current,   4) how to use S-turns and ferry glides to cross a channel that has current  and  5) practice wet exits and self- and assisted-rescues in dynamic current conditions.

Drysuits and helmets required.   A 30-50' long tow AND a 4-8' short tow (aka, contact tow) system required, for rescue practice.  Alternatively, your long tow can be modified to also include a short tow, if preferred.  Here is a link to an example of a short/contact tow system that can be purchased. Thin gloves recommended.

Intermediate Kayak Course (IKC) students have priority taking this clinic.  Others can sign up for the clinic but if  IKC students are on the waitlist, non-IKC participants may have to be canceled from the roster.

Students that are enrolled in the Intermediate Kayak Course:  remember to bring your logbook and to notify your leaders that you want to be evaluated BEFORE we get on the water.

Please note that even in mild dynamic water, some people will be prone to seasickness.  If that could be you, we recommend that you take seasickness medication prior to this clinic and let your leaders know if you start feeling queasy.
