This is a multi-day program to receive instructor training in ACA Level 3 Coastal Sea Kayaking with multi-day testing and certification.

This in not a free course, the cost of IDW (Instructor Development Workshop) and ICE (Instructor Certification Exam) will be paid directly to the Instructor. An ACA Level 3 Skills Assessment needs to be passed BEFORE the IDW begins.  Please contact the leader listed for this course for names and contact information of ACA certified instructors (Level 3 Coastal Kayaking or above) who can do the Skills Assessment.  It is your responsibility to arrange, schedule, and complete the Skills Assessment before IDW.  More information about what requirements are in a Level 3 Coastal Kayaking Skills Assessment is available on the ACA website (ACA.org).

This program of training and certification is a way to learn the ACA (American Canoe Association) method of teaching sea kayaking skills at Level 3. Formal instructor training and certification is not required by the Mountaineers. ACA is a national organization that provides training in a wide variety of water sports including sea kayaking. Instructor trainers (ITs) certified in sea kayaking by the ACA offer skill classes, courses, and certifications at various levels. An ACA Instructor Trainer  will be running this program of Level 3 training and certification.

The purpose of this program is to provide instruction on how to teach sea kayaking rather than a course on how to sea kayak.  There are two parts to this program (plus an ACA Level 3 Skills Assessment prior to IDW):

  • Skills Assessment (to be passed prior to IDW)
  • 3-day Instructor Development Workshop (IDW)
  • 2-day Instructor Certification Exam (ICE)

The cost of IDW and ICE will be paid directly to the Instructor Trainer.

The IDW and ICE are being offered with several months between them to allow for further development and practice before evaluation.  Specific details about criteria upon which an instructor candidate is evaluated can be found here: ACA L3 Instructor Criteria

You must pass an ACA Level 3 Coastal Sea Kayaking Skills Assessment PRIOR to the IDW. See the attachment of the testing criteria. ACA L3 Assessment After you enroll, the leader will connect you with certified instructors so you can work with them schedule a skills assessment that must be completed before the IDW.
