Review of Advanced Off-Trail Navigation Field Trip - Heybrook Ridge

Field Trip to Heybrook Ridge via Lewis Creek Road to review retooled work areas and exercises.

  • Moderate
  • Easy
  • Mileage: 5.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 900 ft

This visit will cover the proposed changes made to the Heybrook field trip. It starts at the Galena gate and follows Lewis Creek road to the ridge. This affords many visible terrain features including Index, Middle Index, Index North, Power Tower #7, and the radio tower above the town of Index. It is also 3 times wider than the Lookout trail, contains switchbacks, the Lewis Creek bridge, ample fall line practice spots, and multiple examples of the "cliff" we used to point out at stop 4 on the Lookout trail.

It is also far less busy than the Lookout trail, and does not require the dangerous walk along Hwy 2.

There are 7+ routes of 500+ meters replacing what used to be Scenario 10. There are also 4 "labyrinth" routes in the 250-350 meter length range that include 6-8 waypoints. Students would be issued a specific paper map showing the waypoints. They would then measure and plot each bearing to find their way to successive waypoints. This exercise expands on the labyrinth model used at the Intro field trip which has proven highly successful over the past 3 years.

Meet at the giant saw blade at Doolittle Park, Index Wa.
