Heybrook Lookout & Ridge

A moderate hike of 2.6 miles round trip and 850 feet of elevation gain to a lookout off Highway 2 just beyond the town of Index. This is an area often used by our Basic Navigation Course's field trips.

Drive SR-2 to the Heybrook Lookout trailhead just past the town of Index.

Hike 1.3 miles and 850 feet up to the lookout at 1,700 ft on Heybrook Ridge.

Continue on  up the ridge to the area is used by our Navigation committee for the Basic Navigation Course. The trail tops out at the lookout at 1,700 ft. Students in the course travel off trail 500 to 1,000 feet of elevation gain further up the ridge and hike 6+ miles over the course of the field trip.

  • If you are scheduling this as a day hike, please limit your group size to 12 people, unless it is for a Navigation Course field trip or stewardship trip.
  • Please book only one group per day unless this is for the combined Wilderness Navigation Course Field Trip where one field trip is for the "regular" course  and one is for the pilot eLearning course.
