More information about the assessment will be provided in the welcome email.
Candidates who successfully complete the assessment may continue the process of earning a Basic Navigation Badge by:
- Registering for Instructor Training, then
- Instructing at an upcoming Seattle Wilderness Navigation workshop and field field
Candidates who do not successfully complete the assessment must complete the the Wilderness Navigation course to earn the Basic Navigation Badge.

Required Equipment
- Compass with Adjustable Declination - Suunto MC-2 USGS is highly recommended (refer to the Course Materials tab for link to Compass Specs of approved compasses)
- Barometric Altimeter
- The Altimeter+ (IOS) or Altimeter Plus (Android) app is acceptable.
- iPhone 6 or later can measure barometric air pressure.
- Cell phone with Caltopo or GaiaGPS apps installed
- Create an account for these application. Free subscriptions are acceptable.

- Rain gear, gloves, hat, and warm layers - weather dependent
- Trail snacks and water
- Notebook and pencil/pen
