Moss Workshop - Seattle - 2025

Naturalist Course

Moss Workshop

We will learn about moss identification using visual keys for common mosses in our area.

Discover the mosses, liverworts, and lichens that thrive in the Pacific Northwest's lowland forests and river valleys, particularly during the region's wet winter months. This workshop offers a practical introduction to identifying these organisms. Using a custom-designed visual key provided to all participants, you'll learn to identify up to 35 common mosses, several liverworts, and over 10 lichens. The workshop will also cover the ecological roles these organisms play in our forests, coastal areas, and mountain ecosystems.

The workshop includes an online evening lecture and a half-day field trip in a local forest. Participants will receive a waterproof, printed color copy of the course guidebook.
Please select and note the start time of your field trip - listed in order as either 9 am, 10 am, or 12:30 pm. Because heavy rain can make field identification challenging, please select a backup field trip date from the available options.
