Just for fun - 2nd Annual CHS Foraging hike on Frog Mountain!

Frog Mountain is a paradise for berry lovers, offering an impressive variety of wild edibles along the trail. As we ascend, we'll find thimbleberries, red huckleberries, oval-leaf blueberries, and trailing blackberries, their vines weaving through the undergrowth with small, dark berries ripening in patches of sun. At the summit, the real prize awaits: an entire mountaintop covered in Cascade Bilberries, which live up to their name (Vaccinium deliciosum) by being some of the sweetest, most flavorful wild berries in the Northwest. While wild strawberries will be out of season, we'll still spot their distinctive leaves and runners, a reminder to return earlier in the summer.

Beyond berries, Frog Mountain is home to remarkable wild mushrooms, including the possibility of boletes as-big-as your-head hidden beneath the trees. Other finds may include golden chanterelles, hedgehog mushrooms, and the occasional lobster mushroom, each with unique flavors and textures. While mushroom foraging requires careful identification, the variety here makes it an exciting place to explore.

This hike is perfect for anyone who loves berries but has been hesitant to pick them for fear of misidentification. Unlike mushrooms, most edible berries in this region have few or no dangerous look-alikes, making Frog Mountain an excellent place to gain confidence in foraging. Whether you come for the adventure, the alpine views, or the sheer joy of eating fresh-picked berries straight from the bush, Frog Mountain offers an unforgettable foraging experience.
