Coastal Geology
“Et tu, tsunami?”
The dynamic coastline of Washington is shaped by the relentless forces of waves, tides, and tectonic uplift. This region is constantly evolving, with sea stacks, beaches, and headlands forming as land erodes and sediment shifts. Evidence of past tsunamis, coastal uplift, and long-term sea level changes can be found in these landscapes, offering a record of the region’s geological past. This hike reveals a coastline in flux, where shifting tides, rising land, and eroding cliffs tell the ongoing story of land and sea in motion.
The Ozette Triangle offers a perfect showcase of coastal geology, including sea stacks, eroding bluffs, and tidepools. The area provides evidence of past tsunamis, wave erosion, and shifting sea levels, giving insight into the long-term evolution of the Pacific coast.
