CHS 1 Hike - Navaho Pass

This is one of the classic Teanaway area hikes and features riparian delights, wildflowers, interesting geology, and ultimately an excellent view of the Stuart Range. CHS hike led at a CHS 1 pace (1.5-2.0 mph)

  • Strenuous
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 11.5 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 3,000 ft

Plan on meeting at the Tibbets Valley Park & Ride (exit 15 off of I-90), leaving at 6:30 am for an approximate two hour drive via I-90 to the trailhead with an  outhouse style toilet. A quick restroom break in Cle Elum might be preferred by some.  The last four miles to the trailhead are potholed gravel road that will be at about 10-20 mph, but was navigable in a Prius two years ago.  A NW Forest or Senior pass is needed for parking at the trailhead.

A post hike meal, most likely in Roslyn, is planned.

After a short flat section along Stafford Creek, the trail rises at a fairly consistent 500 feet per mile to the Pass. At 3.5 miles, there should be a water source for filling water bottles near a trail junction. This is followed by switch-backs to a pleasant meadow and then a short walk through a ‘moonscape’ to the pass and stunning views.
Please consider bringing hiking poles as the elevation gain on the hike is 3000 feet.
