This is an excellent early-season, beginners backpack along the lovely west shore of Ross Lake, to the world-famous lower reaches of Big Beaver creek where giant, ancient Western Red Cedar and Douglas-fir trees (some up to 1000 years old) grow among the marshes along the rushing milky green water. See Marco's excellent trip report from the 2025 field trip.

Day 1: 8 miles. We will descend 600' and cross the Ross Dam, then continue along the west shore of Ross Lake to Big Beaver Boat Camp group site. The trail has many small ups and downs, but not much in the way of big hill climbs. We will take it at a moderate pace, stopping as needed for pack and clothing adjustment, and for some packs-off snack breaks. Set up camp, and enjoy exploring.

Day 2: 8 miles. We will eat breakfast and pack up, aiming to hit the trail around 8am. Our biggest climb of the day will be the final 600' gain back to the cars from Ross Dam.

Special NOTe:

This particular destination is contingent upon securing a group permit for Big Beaver camp; leader will take care of this. If permit cannot be obtained, or weather / trail conditions are not favorable (e.g. too much rain), we will change the destination to something comparable.

About Basic Backpacking Field Trips

The Basic Backpacking Field Trip is the final scheduled activity of the Basic Backpacking Course.  For most students it will be their first overnight trip in the backcountry.  Basic Backpacking Field Trips are usually single-night trips along Easy or Moderate routes that do not present any unusual technical challenges.

TBA, but not too early in the morning. Carpooling strongly encouraged, to reduce our impact on roads and parking areas.

All drivers will need to share their car details with the trip leader ahead of time to be added to the permit for overnight parking.

Pack fitting and gear check at the trailhead; we'll aim to start hiking around 9AM.
