Come explore the east slopes of the Cascades and find (hopefully) better weather and some wildflowers. After introductions at the trailhead and a brief review of backpack fit principles to make your hike easier, we will head up the trail. The trail is generally moderate, but we will take our time and vein the lookout for wildflowers. Once we are in camp and settled in, we will optionally head further up the valley as time and trail conditions allow. We will plan to share supper time together, possibly consider a small campfire if conditions are appropriate, before getting a good night's sleep. In the morning, we will have breakfast, break down camp, and close with some discussion before hiking back down the trail. Our planned start on Friday of a long weekend will hopefully beat the crowds. Get your Memorial Day weekend started with a bang!
Please note that destination is subject to change depending on what we learn about weather and trail conditions. Pack your 11th essential which is flexibility and willingness to participate as a team. Regardless of where we go, we can expect to learn something new, support each other, and leave our path better than we found it.
About Basic Backpacking Field Trips
The Basic Backpacking Field Trip is the final scheduled activity of the Basic Backpacking Course. For most students it will be their first overnight trip in the backcountry. Basic Backpacking Field Trips are usually single-night trips along Easy or Moderate routes that do not present any unusual technical challenges.
