Basic Backpacking Field Trip - Dosewallips River/Abandoned National Park Road

Relaxed stroll up the old Dosewallips River Road with a backpack. Great opportunity to get out and test the gear in the early season.

The Dosewallips River Trail follows the old road most of the way, so it is easy to follow and generally well maintained. It will be about 6.5 miles to camp with a slow but steady gain of 1200 feet.

Plan for an early start on Saturday to ensure the group can get parking and first dibs on campsites.  We'll move at a leisurely pace while everyone adjusts to their packs, admires the flowers, and enjoys a spring day in the wilderness. We'll be camping at the old Dosewallips campground. There are black bears in this area, so bear canisters are required. Yes, there are bear boxes at camp, but this is a great opportunity to practice packing those cannisters. This is generally a busy spot, so I find it easier to be prepared. Sunday morning, we'll have breakfast, pack up, and hopefully be out for an early lunch. Please don't make afternoon plans since times are not guaranteed.

Meeting Place: Dosewallips Road Trailhead

Time: 8:30am (this may shift based on the summer ferry schedule)

Carpools can be organized closer to the event and are highly encouraged.
