The Mountaineers Wilderness First Aid course (formerly Alpine First Aid) consists of two parts. To finish the course and receive the Wilderness First Aid badge, participants must complete both of the following:
WFA Wilderness First Aid - 16 hour weekend course
WFA Scenarios - a hands-on practical session
Wilderness First Aid is taught by Remote Medical International (RMI) at the Mountaineers’ Program Center on various weekends throughout the year. The course includes an independent certification. Your course fee covers the cost of this instruction.
WFA Scenarios is a hands-on practical session at the Mountaineers’ Program Center to test your skills after completing the Wilderness First Aid course. Register for a scenario date that occurs after your WFA course. Completion of the Scenarios session is required to receive your badge in the Mountaineers system. You may not do these out of order.
Equivalency notes: Some requirements may be waived or equivalency granted to individuals who have current backcountry medical certifications or extensive experience in providing medical care in remote or austere environments. Contact the course leader if you meet these requirements. You will have to provide proof of your certification and/or experience and may still be required to complete the Scenarios portion of the class to receive credit. Urban and front-country medical training alone is not sufficient to meet this requirement, even with advanced education and experience.
Badges you will earn:
