The goal of this evaluation is to enable climbers with substantial outdoor sport climbing experience to obtain equivalency so they can lead single pitch sport routes on Mountaineers rock climbing trips (read about types of Mountaineers climbs) or instruct with the Introduction to Leading Bolted Routes course.
Skills covered include:
- Route assessment
- Partner checks
- Belaying
- Rope management
- Equipment
- Clipping
- Sport anchors
- Lead climbing
- Clean to lower transitions (while remaining redundant through both anchor bolts and without going off belay)
Rappelling, trad climbing, and multipitch climbing are not covered.
Successful candidates for the Introduction to Leading Bolted Routes badge will instill confidence that they can safely lead single-pitch bolted (sport) routes, clean routes, and set up top ropes for others with limited supervision from a Mountaineers climb leader.
