Gym to Crag

Feeling confident in the gym but don't want to kill yourself at the crag? Learn the skills to be a safe and responsible climber!

The Mountaineers Gym to Crag course is designed to transition sport climbers who are proficient leaders indoors, but would like to take their skills out to the crag. Through this course participants will be taught the standard ethics & etiquette associated with climbing outdoors. As well as general outdoor skills (layering, packing, map reading, etc.) and the knowledge needed to stay safe and comfortable at the crag.

Participants will also gain technical skills including building a “SERENE” anchor, and cleaning and rappelling, to name a few. This course includes one full day and one evening at the mountaineers program center, and one day of cragging at Exit 38. By the end of the course students should have the skills and knowledge to safely and confidently go climbing on their own at a local crag.

Course Prerequisites:

     - Previous Lead climbing experience indoors

     -Belay and Lead certified by a gym or other organization, or can show proficiency 

     -Can comfortably lead up to 5.9 in the gym

Rock Shoes

Tube style belay device w/ Locking carabiner

Chain style personal anchor w/ locking carabiner (ex. Metolious PA system)

Cordelette

4 additional locking carabiners

9-12 quickdraws

hero loop/autoblock

Backpack to hold it all (Preferably 20L)

 

Recommended/optional:

Grigri or other assisted braking belay device

60-70m rope (Ropes will be supplied during course)

Chalk
