Introduction to Multi-Pitch Trad A

Introduction to climbing in a multi pitch environment. Please read registration notes in the course description.

This course is designed to teach students the skills to complete multi pitch traditional routes at crags. Students will be given time and education to safely and efficiently to lead multi pitch climbs and develop new skills that will ensure they are effective leaders for the multi pitch environment.  The field trips take place at Mt. Erie and Leavenworth.

This course will cover the following skills:

  • Gear Selection
  • Route selection 
  • Rappelling skills
  • Anchor Building
  • Racking
  • Belay station transitions
  • Belay escape
  • Ascending a rope
  • Exit strategies or "how-to bail"
  • Dealing with environmental factors

This course builds off the skills learned in the Intro to Single Pitch Trad course. Climbers should be confident leading 5.6 trad for the course in Leavenworth.

Students that are part of the 2020 Intermediate Climbing Package will be able to register for this course from Jan 15 through Jan 30th.  General registration will be open starting Feb 1.

Please note that if you are registered for Intro to Single Pitch Trad A for 2020, you do not currently have the Leading Trad Routes badge, please forward your single-pitch course acceptance confirmation email to the course leader to reserve a spot. Your acceptance into this course would be contingent on your completion of the required single-pitch course (or equivalent) by the date of the first scheduled activity of this course.  Students that are registered in single-pitch courses that have a later start date (modules B and C) are not eligible to register for this course.

Please note that another session this course is offered in June/July with field trips in Squamish, Canada. Climbers who are confident leading 5.7 trad and following 5.9 trad should consider signing up for the Squamish module.

  • 6 24 inch alpine slings with 2 wire gate biners per sling
  • 3 locking biners
  • auto blocking belay device, ei petzle reverso, BD ATC Guide, mega jel
  • nut tool
  • 20 feet cordalette, 6M nylon, 5M tech cord or spectra

  • smaller Camelots optional; BDC3's, or any other brand
