Family Backpacking Skills - Burfoot Park

Seminar

Family Backpacking Skills - Burfoot Park

Kids and their parents can develop skills and understanding of backpacking packs, gear, tents, food, and hygiene while visiting six activity stations. At the food station we will be preparing a backpacking meal to experience creative backcountry cooking. This class is best paired with the online Family Backpacking class on May 26 and/or the Adult backpacking course offered by the Hiking Committee.

  • Easy
  • For Beginners (Getting Started Series)
  • Mileage: 1.0

We will divide into groups and visit the following stations where kids and their adults will do activities to help them learn new skills associated with backpacking.  Adults will learn what gear they will need and how to help kids be successful.

This is best for children age 5 and up.

Stations will include:  clothing and shoes, backpacks and how to pack, Leave No Trace and personal and camp hygiene, tents and tarps, sleeping bags and mats, backcountry food and water.

Your lunch will be included in the fee.  Come ready to try new things!

Meet at the Forest Shelter at Burfoot Park at 10am.

After introductions and orientation you will divide into stations for the morning, all convene for the food and lunch station, visit different stations, and be ready to leave by 2:00pm

Required Equipment

Required Equipment

You are encouraged to wear backpacking clothes and shoes so that we can discuss and share ideas about the best clothes. Dress for the weather!  Last year it rained the entire time.  You will be outside for four hours!

Each person, including kids, should bring daypacks with water, spare clothes, a snack, and a bandana.

Each family needs a family first aid kit. A knife or multi-tool would be useful. Kids should only bring them if they are already trained in safe handling, as we will not be covering knife use.

You are also encouraged to bring any gear you want to discuss with the leaders.
