Basic Cross-country (Nordic) Skiing - 2023

Cross-country Skiing Course

Basic Cross Country (Nordic) Skiing

Learn the basics of cross country skiing while learning to travel safely in the mountains in winter. Already know how to ski? Brush up on your skiing and learn avalanche awareness while meeting new friends to ski with.

This course is designed for those completely new to classic cross country (nordic) skiing as well as those with some experience who want to  improve their skills and learn about winter recreation safety.  We do not teach skate or backcountry skiing (alpine touring, telemark) in this course.

Lectures: The first lecture in this introductory course covers winter hazards and ailments, cold weather clothing and gear, the 10 essentials, and winter recreation etiquette.  The second lecture includes topics specific to cross country skiing basics such as equipment, where to go, waxing and skier etiquette. For the third lecture, the Northwest Avalanche Center will present their Awareness Class.

Field Trips: The required, day-long field trip covers basic skills needed to ski on groomed, tracked areas or un-groomed trails such as logging roads. Instruction includes diagonal stride, downhill techniques for speed control, uphill travel and turning. Students can rent skis at the White Pass Nordic Center. Purchase of a trail pass is required.

For students who would like additional instruction on beginner trails, we will offer an optional second field trip. Successful completion of this optional field trip will count as one outing toward graduation. Details will be provided at a later date.

Graduation Requirements: In addition to attending the lectures and field trip, graduation requires successful completion of one Mountaineers-lead cross country ski outing. Completion of the Avalanche Awareness badge, either on your own or through the lecture offered in this course, is also required.

Graduation allows you to pursue a trip leader and/or instructor role in future years.

The Basic Cross Country Ski badge is not a prerequisite for going on Mountaineers cross country ski outings, unless the leader decides to make it a requirement.

NOTE: This is an introductory course. However, cross country skiing requires a moderate level of fitness and an ability to balance. Also, recent leg, back or foot injuries can make learning to ski challenging. If you have any concerns or questions,  please contact the Leader before registering.
