Due to a portion of this course being funded by the Olympia Mountaineers it is only eligible to Olympia members. Thanks for your understanding. Course will be held in Tacoma @ Edgeworks Climbing Gym by a AIARE certified instructor. Intensive 4 day course that covers the avalanche phenomenon, avalanche terrain, decision making, travel techniques, human factors, and companion rescue.

This is a 4 days course that covers the avalanche phenomenon, avalanche terrain, decision making, travel techniques, human factors and companion rescue. This course will focus on identifying the right questions, rather than proving "answers". We will offer lessons and exercises that are practical and applicable in the field.

At the end of this course you should be able to : 

  • plan and prepare for travel in avalanche terrain
  • recognize avalanche terrain
  • describe a framework for making decisions in avalanche terrain
  • apply effective companion rescue

  • Touring Skis, Split Board or Snow Shoes

  • Avalanche Transceiver (max 5 years old)
  • Avalanche Probe
  • Avalanche Shovel (Metal Blade required)

Clothing

  • Appropriate winter layers per Mountaineers standards

  • Mechanical Pencil
  • Snow Saw
  • Snow Study Kit (optional): dial stem thermometer (celsius), crystal card, loupe (5x - 10x magnification)
