1200 Miles on the Pacific Northwest Trail from Glacier Park to Cape Alava

The Pacific Northwest trail is a 1,200 mile route from the continental divide in Glacier National park to the western most point in the contiguous US, Cape Alava in the Olympic National Park. It’s still young and unestablished compared to more popular trails like the Appalachian Trail and Pacific Crest trail, which is why Alex Maier chose it for his first thru hike in 2015. He was looking for solitude and an unsupported wilderness experience. The hike would also serve as a proving ground to see if he could make it as an outdoor filmmaker. If he could hike and film the entire trail then he could take himself seriously and pursue his passions as a career.

Alex Maier is a thru-hiker and filmmaker who has chosen to focus on some of America's lesser known long-distance trails because he likes the solitude and adventure of route-finding on less established trails. Come along with Alex as he discovered is love for long distance backpacking and his voice as a film maker. That means carrying nearly a third of his base weight in camera gear, but he enjoys the filming as much as the hiking. The drive to capture a good story out on the trail helps motivate him to keep going, especially when he's out there alone. In this virtual event, Alex will introduce the trail and the making of the film, take a pause for everyone to watch the film on YouTube, then come back for a discussion of all the behind the scenes logistics of hiking and filming on a trail like the PNT. The session will end with plenty of time for Q&A and the opportunity to look at and ask questions about Alex's gear from the trip.

Join Alex at this exclusive event offered by the Mountaineers Foothills Branch Backpacking Committee.
