This hike counts toward your monthly required GoHike course May trips.

  • Easy
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 4.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 400 ft
  • Pace: 1.5 - 2.2 mph

Starting at the Red Town trail head we’ll explore the Bagley Seam and look for the coal vein, then take the Red Town trail past the meadow restoration project. From there, we’ll turn left along the Indian Trail where we’ll see Far Country Falls to the right of the trail. Turning left on the Far Country Trail, we’ll climb to a peek-a-boo view that looks southwest, have a short break, and return along the same paths to the trailhead. After reaching the viewpoint, we will discuss and decide on one or two possible side spurs to explore depending on time and interest.

We will move more quickly along the Red Town and Indian Trails and allow for a slower pace on the climb to Far Country Viewpoint.

These trails are very popular and may be crowded with people, dogs, and possibly off-leash dogs. The trails are wide and in excellent condition. Some sections also permit horses.

Please arrive at the Red Town Trailhead parking lot by 7:45, geared up and ready to hike by 8:00 a.m. Note that this is a popular hiking area and arriving early is strongly advised. There are portable toilets at the trailhead. We will meet near the information sign.
