July Hikes: 3.75 to 6.5 miles, 500 to 1,750 feet gain

Field trip: GoHike: Beginner Hiking Course

July Hikes: 3.75 to 6.5 miles, 500 to 1,750 feet gain - Hugo Peak

Pack Forest is a UW-run research forest Most of the hike is through forest and a previously logged out area that offers a nice view. With several sections of step-ups, the trail is a good workout, and though it crosses a couple of access roads. The trail is steep, climbing 800 feet in about 2.5 miles, but the trail is well-maintained and has a good picnic spot and a hike register at the top, along with some great views of Mt Rainier. This hike counts toward your monthly required GoHike course July trips.

  • Mileage: 4.5 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 880 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 1,790 ft
  • Pace: 1.5 - 2.0 mph

There are no toilet facilities at the trailhead (closed due to vandalism) but you can stop at the Eatonville Visitor Center, about 10 mins before the trailhead.

We will make a few stops along the route for clothing adjustments and water breaks. We will stop at the top of the trail for lunch and to enjoy the view.

My walk style is social and nature-focused.  We will take regular breaks and encourage going at a pace where you can still talk. The group will stay together and move at the pace of the slowest person (which may be me. on the downhills).

I encourage you to tune into the quiet of the forest. Please feel free to bring a charged phone and take pictures but refrain from taking or making phone calls while on the trail unless absolutely necessary.

Further details will be sent out in a Hello Hiker email on July 24. Registration closes on July 25.

Meet at 10:00am @ Hugo Peak Trailhead for a 10:15 AM start.  Parking at the trailhead is limited so I encourage carpooling. No pass is required.
