Backpacking Building Blocks Student-Only Backpack - Suiattle River

This field trip will give Group 8 B3 students the opportunity to try out gear and new skills on an overnight backpack. This is a mentored backpack for a new B3 backpack leader. If students from other groups would like to join, please contact the backpack leader.

  • Moderate/Strenuous
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 13.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 900 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 2,500 ft
  • Pace: 2.0 mph

The trip will follow the Suiattle River upstream to one of several camps.  The first mile was burned 4-5 years ago, but beyond that, we will mainly be in the trees.  There will be some rock slide areas to cross and likely some downed trees as well.  The cumulative elevation gain will be much more than the 900' listed.  The trail climbs and falls repeatedly, and we will likely end up with at least 3000' cumulative gain.  There will be numerous creek crossings (and plenty of water for refills).  We will plan to camp near the bridge at mile 6.1.  There is a box toilet on the near side of the bridge, but we cannot assume that it is maintained.  Once camp is set up, there will be an optional day hike (3 miles RT, 400' gain) to the bridge crossing on the PCT.

Bear proof food storage is required - either a bear can or Ursak with odor proof ziplocks.   Since the trip is a short overnight, these can be shared, as can stoves and water filters.  There are plenty of areas near both sides of the bridge to set up tents, so tent sharing is not required.

The goals of the trip are to become comfortable with gear and food choices.

More info to come in May

We will meet at the Ash Way Park and Ride in Lynnwood at 6:30 AM to consolidate cars, then drive 2.5 hours to the Suiattle River trailhead.  The section between Darrington and the trailhead will take an hour.  The last part of the road has some substantial potholes, so higher clearance vehicles are preferred.  Coordinates and directions will be sent to participants a week before the trip.

If you want to meet at the trailhead, please be there by 9:00 AM.  We will aim to start hiking by 9:30 AM.

An NW Forest Pass or similar is required for parking at the trailhead.  A Discover Pass is NOT accepted.
