Backpacking Building Blocks Student-Only Backpack - Hoh River to Olympus Ranger Station

This field trip will give B3 students the opportunity to try out gear and new skills on an easy 2-night backpack with an experienced mentor. Priority to Brian and Alina's mentor group until 03/22.

We will meet at Hoh Rain Forest Visitor Center on Friday morning .

Please note you will need to have America the beautiful Pass or pay $30 for entrance to the Olympics National Park. 

We will head out on the Hoh River Trailhead for 5.75 miles to the 5 Mile Island Group Camp site. We will set up camp here for two nights. 

The next day we will head out for a 8.6-mile round trip to Olympus Guard station and back to camp.  

On day three we will have a casual morning and head out for a 5.75-mile hike back out to the trailhead.

  • The route starts and ends on the west side of the Olympic Peninsula.  Depending on where you are coming from, the drive to the trailhead could take 4 hours or longer and could involve a ferry trip.  Please take this into consideration when signing up and planning to leave.  You may consider staying near the trailhead atHoh Rain Forest Campground the night before.
  • We will need to carry bear canisters.  
  • Participants will be asked to kindly reimburse the leader $8 each for the cost  of the backcountry permits.
  • The trailhead is inside Olympic National Park.  You'll need to pay the entrance fee or have a National Park Pass or similar.
