Backpacking Building Blocks Student-Only Backpack - Dosewallips River/Abandoned National Park Road

This field trip will give B3 students the opportunity to try out gear and new skills on an easy overnight backpack with an experienced mentor.

We will meet at the trailhead at 8AM the end of Dosewallips Road.  Please note that this is not part of Dosewallips State Park.  

Directions from WTA.org: 

From Quilcene, drive south on Highway 101 for 11 miles to Brinnon, turning right at milepost 306 onto Dosewallips Road.

From Shelton, drive north on US 101 for 41 miles and turn left, 1 mile beyond Dosewallips State Park.

Proceed 8.5 miles to the new vehicle road end. Parking is on the roadside and can be backed up considerably. No toilets available.

* Beware of potholes at the end of the pavement and the start of the gravel road.

Northwest Forest Pass or America the Beautiful Pass Required

Priority Registration will be given the Group 5- Becca and Jason. Other B3 student are welcome to request leaders permission starting 5/1/2023.

This trail has a nice steady incline.  We will travel around the washout by way of some switch backs before returning to the trial. We can plan to stop/break at Elkhorn Campground at about 2.7miles in. We will follow the abandoned Dosewallips River Road for about another 3.3 miles to Dosewallips Campground. This is the site of the former rangers station.  We will set up camp along the rivers edge.   This site has bear lockers, so you do no need to bring a bear canister for this trip however Op Sak or Order Proof Bag is required for in the locker for food and all other scented item storage.

When requesting Leader's Permisson, please include the dates and location of your last 3 hike, snowshoes, or backpacking trips this year.
