Wilderness First Aid (WFA)

Note: this class will be open to backpackers, scramblers, snowshoers first then remaining slots will be open to members and guests.

The Mountaineers Wilderness First Aid course (formerly MOFA OR Alpine First Aid) consists of two parts. To finish the course and receive the Wilderness First Aid badge, participants must complete both of the following:

WFA Wilderness First Aid  - two 8-hour lectures

WFA Scenarios -  a 2-3 hour hands-on scenarios practice session 

if you are unable to attend this scenario class then you can sign up with other branches OR can sign up for later scenario sessions scheduled in the year. Note: you must complete 16-hour class room lecture before taking scenario class.

Wilderness First Aid is taught by experienced wilderness and emergency medical providers from Remote Medical International (RMI). The course includes an independent certification that is recognized nationally. Your course fee covers the cost of this instruction.

WFA Scenarios is a hands-on practical session at an outdoor location to test your skills after completing the Wilderness First Aid course.   Register for a scenario date that occurs after your WFA course. Completion of the lectures and the scenarios session are required to receive your badge in the Mountaineers system. You may not do these out of order.

Equivalency notes: Some requirements may be waived or equivalency granted to individuals who have current backcountry medical certifications or extensive experience in providing medical care in remote or austere environments. Contact the course leader if you meet these requirements. You will have to provide proof of your certification and/or experience and may still be required to complete the Scenarios portion of the class to receive credit. Urban and front-country medical training alone is not sufficient to meet this requirement, even with advanced education and experience.
