This practice session will provide dedicated time for students to learn basic belay skills for rock climbing including:

  • Fitting & wearing a harness
  • Tying in with a retraced figure 8 knot
  • Partner checks
  • Climbing commands
  • Top rope belaying with the PBUS method
  • Lowering with an assisted braking belay device

This session is strongly encouraged for students who are new to rock climbing. Belaying is a fundamental skill that you will use throughout the Basic Alpine course. Spending time perfecting this skill now will make future classes easier.

For students who have already passed a belay test at an indoor climbing gym, this session is optional.
