Backcountry Ski Equipment

This seminar is designed specifically for skiers who are new to backcountry skiing and wish to gain an understanding of the specialized equipment involved. The session begins with a concise lecture that introduces participants to the essential gear required for a typical one-day backcountry ski tour. The lecture will also address some of the important considerations and tradeoffs that come into play when selecting equipment.

Following the lecture, experienced backcountry ski leaders will conduct breakout sessions. During these sessions, they will share insights into the equipment they personally use for day ski tours and answer any questions participants may have. Students who already own equipment are encouraged to bring the items they plan to use on a typical day ski tour for discussion and review.

NOTE: this seminar WILL NOT cover equipment required for overnight tours or winter camping.

The key learning objectives are

  • Become familiar with the equipment required for a typical day ski tour
  • Evaluate the tradeoffs between minimizing trail weight and ensuring emergency preparedness
