Basic Sea Kayaking Pool Session

Field trip: Basic Sea Kayaking Course

Basic Sea Kayaking Pool Session - Evergreen Community Aquatic Center

Basic Sea Kayaking Pool Session

  • Easy

This will be an active clinic where  you will learn how to get yourself out of a capsized kayak and then back in using self-rescue and assisted rescue techniques.

You'll be paired with another student and have a lead instructor and one or two assistant instructors beside you in the pool.

See the list of equipment under "Required Equipment".

We will begin the session with a swim test where you will be asked to swim the length of the pool (25 yards) and back using any stroke you choose.  You can rest briefly at the end of the 25 yards, use a dog-paddle, a back-stroke, a crawl, or any self-propulsion method you choose using any combination of your hands, arms, and legs.  This is not a timed test and there are no "points" awarded or subtracted for form.  All we want to do is ensure that you are comfortable in the water.

Suggested Gear for Students for Pool Party

  • If you have an appropriate kayak (see full course listing) please bring it and a correctly sized spray skirt.
  • Swim suit or quick dry shorts and top. No cotton.
  • Rash guard. A rash guard is a quick dry tee shirt, short or long sleeve, that is worn under the PFD to minimize rubbing and chaffing.
  • Wetsuit if you have one: Shorties or long-Farmer John’s. Surfing style wet suits. Do not bring thick diving wetsuits, you need flexibility.
  • Flip flops or sandals for wearing in shower/locker area
  • Booties, water shoes, or old tennis shoes for use in the pool. NO sandals or shoes with straps in the pool or boats. They tend to catch on things as you are working in and around the boats.
  • PFD: if you have a Type III PFD bring it so you can work in your own gear
  • Towels and any toiletries you would care to bring. There are showers with soap.
  • Fleece or sweatshirt or something else really warm for over your swimsuit while out of the water in-between segments.
  • Snacks, water, etc. for hydrating and energizing during the session. The club will provide pizza since this pool session overlaps the entire dinner period.
  • Change of clothes for after the event.
  • Swimmer’s nose plugs and goggles if you already have them and know how to use/work in them.
  • Combination or keyed lock if you want to stash your stuff in lockers. Otherwise we just leave in piles on the bleachers.
  • A good attitude and a  willingness to work hard and learn.
