In Memory of Jim Whittaker

In Memory of Jim Whittaker

Gifts in memory of Jim Whittaker support The Mountaineers commitment to create safe and welcoming spaces for all people to learn and grow through their experiences in the outdoors.

Thank you for considering a gift in honor of beloved mountaineers legend Jim Whittaker, author, speaker, environmentalist, pioneering outdoor leader, and the first American to summit Everest. Jim died peacefully in his home in Port Townsend on April 7, 2026 at the age of 97.

It’s hard to overestimate what Jim Whittaker means to The Mountaineers. He embodied everything we hold dear and true – believing that we are our best selves when we connect with nature and that everyone deserves the chance to do so. He dreamed big, pushed himself to extraordinary heights, and then reached back to help others rise alongside him.

A fierce advocate for public lands, Jim believed that protecting these places and access to outdoor recreation was essential. He never spoke of “conquering” mountains like Everest or K2, he revered them.

“When I think about what a blink in time each of us is compared to the 4.5-billion-year sweep of earth’s history, it seems to me that the biggest challenge we face is how to create a life of meaning,” Jim wrote in “A Life on the Edge.”

Jim met that challenge fully. His life was rich with purpose, and his legacy will continue to inspire us all as we follow in his bootsteps.

The Whittaker family invited donations to The Mountaineers as a meaningful way to honor Jim's legacy.
