In 1986, Sharon Wood became the first woman from the Americas to summit Mount Everest—and the first woman in the world to do so via the difficult West Ridge from Tibet and without Sherpa support. Wood joins us to share highlights from her book, Rising: Becoming the First North American Woman on Everest (published by Mountaineers Books), which is both a gripping adventure story and her memoir. The world’s highest mountain serves as a stage for a bigger story to unfold about the value of relationships: her relationship with herself, some remarkable people and the world around her. Through tales of teenage misadventures to bold solo ascents in the Peruvian Andes, she reveals what spurred her to keep pushing her potential before and after this life altering ascent on Everest. Wood demonstrates courage in her climbing, but even more so in her intimate disclosure of what she sought, what she feared, and what ultimately fulfilled her.

This event is free and open to the public. Signed copies of Rising will be available for purchase.

Pre-registration is encouraged but not required, and walk-ins are also welcome.
