At The Mountaineers, our values of practicing low impact principles extend beyond the trails and into our daily, digital lives. This past summer, The Mountaineers partnered with a local nonprofit to responsibly rehome our old laptops.

Finding New Life for our Devices

Our staff relies on computers to help carry out our mission. While we take great care of our devices to ensure their longevity, we eventually require replacements to support efficient running of programs and operations. Rather than simply throwing out our old laptops, we recently donated them to Triceratops Technology Resources, a nonprofit in Olympia, Washington that helps other charities and community members overcome technology barriers by offering IT support, data management, digital skills classes, and access to various technological devices.

After donating our devices, a representative from Triceratops Technology Resources shared that some of the laptops were refurbished and given to students during a Computer Basics class held at Fleetwood Apartments, a Low Income Housing Institute for formerly homeless veterans. "A lot of residents at Fleetwood don’t just need skills; they also need access to devices," they said. "We’re grateful to our partners and hardware donors who help ensure participants can leave with refurbished laptops when possible. It makes a big difference when someone can actually put their new skills to use at home."

Triceratops also provided images of program participants putting our laptops to good use as they learned new computer skills. "Everyone was thrilled to receive a device of their very own," Triceratops shared.

We are excited to see how our devices are being repurposed to help others give back to the community and learn essential skills.
