You reach the end of a maintained trail, look up at the rugged ridgeline above, and can't help but wonder what it takes to get there. This is a moment every hiker experiences, and for many, its the spark that leads them to alpine scrambling. Alpine scrambling allows you to reach non-technical summits using your hands, feet, and thoughtful movements through rock, snow, and steep terrain.

For those ready to explore that next level, the Foothills Branch Alpine Scrambling course is open for registration, offering a welcoming, skills-forward pathway into the world of off-trail travel.

What Makes Scrambling Different?

Scrambling is the sweet spot between hiking and technical climbing. It’s adventurous, hands-on, and deeply rewarding — and doesn’t require ropes, harnesses, or specialized climbing gear. Instead, scrambling emphasizes:

  • Confident movement on rock and snow
  • Smart route-finding and terrain assessment
  • Travel as a cohesive, safety-minded group
  • Awareness of weather, conditions, and alpine hazards
  • Learning how to become more confident and less fearful of exposed ridges and summits

Scrambling is a discipline that builds both competence and intuition, helping you read the mountains in a new way.

What You’ll Learn in the Foothills Course

The Foothills Branch is known for its supportive teaching culture, and the Alpine Scrambling course reflects that ethos. Over the season, participants dive into:

  • Rock scrambling techniques
  • Snow travel skills
  • Group travel strategies that keep everyone moving efficiently and safely
  • Decision-making frameworks for evaluating conditions and choosing appropriate routes
  • Preparation for off-trail travel with the appropriate gear and conditioning

Students practice these skills in a mix of classroom sessions, field trips, and real-world scrambles led by experienced volunteer instructors who love helping people grow their mountain confidence. The small group size gives participants one-on-one attention. Most of the field trips also take place close-to-home in the I-90 corridor, so students don’t have to travel to far-off field trip destinations.
