10 ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS

WHAT FIRST BROUGHT YOU TO THE MOUNTAINEERS?

I initially enrolled in the Basic Alpine Climbing course with the goal of climbing Mount Rainier, thinking it would be a one-time experience. Now, three years and several summits later, I'm really grateful that it wasn't just a single event.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MOUNTAINEERS MEMORY?

Two standout experiences that come to mind are summiting Rainier as the first group of the day and witnessing the sunrise over the crater, as well as leading my first group of beginners up a climb and seeing them celebrate their accomplishments.

However, my most treasured memories with this organization (particularly the Tacoma Branch) revolve around the mutual support and encouragement among its members. I have personally been a recipient from this generosity, and there is no greater feeling than being part of such a strong community.

How did you get started as a volunteer?

I have always believed that teaching is an effective way to deepen one's understanding of a skill. When I completed the Basic Alpine Climbing course in 2022, I immediately began volunteering for the 2023 course. This experience not only helped me refine my skills as an instructor but also complemented my learning as an Intermediate course student.

After finishing the Intermediate course, I carried this philosophy forward by joining the Intermediate Committee, where I now assist in running the Intermediate Glacier/Ice module.

Additionally, I co-lead the Sport Climbing course with the Tacoma Branch. My latest volunteer opportunity was with the Avalanche Committee, where I served as an assistant leader for the AIARE 1 course at Baker Lodge. I aim to progress through AIARE 2, Pro 1, Pro 2, and other pertinent avalanche courses, with the goal of becoming a course leader in the future.

What advice do you have for aspiring volunteers?

You don't need to have all the answers to be an effective volunteer. Many people may underestimate the value of simply showing up and offering support in any capacity. It can be daunting to lead a student when you're still a new climber, hiker, kayaker, etc. However, embracing vulnerability and humility can foster a safe and supportive learning environment.
