10 ESSENTIALS QUESTIONS

HOW DID YOU GET INVOLVED WITH THE MOUNTAINEERS?

I initially got involved with The Mountaineers after meeting some Olympia Mountaineers on a spring ascent of Mount Ellinor. On our way up from the lower trailhead we chatted with them and they told us all about The Mountaineers and how they offered courses in alpine scrambling and climbing. At that time I thought my buddy and I knew enough about ice axe and crampon usage from reading and youtube videos that we were prepared. That trip proved how wrong we were. By that point it was too late to get into any courses for the year but I started watching the website and attending Meet The Mountaineers sessions all in preparation to take one of the climbing courses the following year.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU TO GET OUTSIDE WITH US?

I really enjoy meeting new people and passing on the skills that The Mountaineers has taught me. Every Mountaineers trip I go on I seem to meet someone new that is from a different part of the world. So far I have met fellow Mountaineers that hail from France, Iran, India, Germany, Ukraine, Brazil, Romania, Italy, England, China, and Canada.

WHAT'S YOUR FAVORITE Mountaineers MEMORY?

My favorite Mountaineers memory was my first scramble trip. On that trip I got to use all the ice axe skills that brought me to The Mountaineers in the first place. When I got back to the parking lot I realized that The Mountaineers was the place for me and I wanted to stick around and teach others the skills that I had learned.

WHO/WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

All The Mountaineers leaders that came before me and opened the door for me to get outside and showed me that I can get to the top of any peak I want safely.

AS A DONOR AND VOLUNTEER-SUPPORTED ORGANIZATION, THE MOUNTAINEERS IS BASED ON COMMUNITY SUPPORT. HOW HAVE YOU PAID IT FORWARD, OR HOW HAVE YOU BENEFITED FROM SOMEONE ELSE PAYING IT FORWARD?

My volunteer involvement with The Mountaineers started within my first few months of my membership. My first volunteer role was to being a "victim" for Wilderness First Aid scenarios. From there I went on to help instruct the Alpine Scrambling Course and Wilderness Navigation Course. Along the way I earned my Hike Leader and Alpine Scramble Leader Badges. Currently I am the Tacoma Navigation Chair and am instructing for the Tacoma Alpine Scramble Course and Basic Climb Course. When I am not involved with course planning and instruction I try and get out as much as possible on Mountaineers trips.

WHAT DOES ADVENTURE MEAN TO YOU?

Adventure for me is going out into the unknown with a group of friends. It doesn't matter if it is to a place I have been before or not. Every trip makes a new memory that I can look back upon.

LIGHTNING ROUND

Sunrise or sunset? Sunrise
Smile or game face? Smile
What's your 11th Essential? My friends. They are there to help me lead trips and activities. Without them being there for me I would not be able to lead the courses and trips I have led successfully.
What’s your happy place? Walking down a trail chatting with friends.
Post-adventure meal of choice? Country Fried Steak
If you could be a rockstar at any outdoor activity overnight, what would it be? Wingsuiting
