Trip Report
Seattle Olmsted Circuit: Section 2: Woodland Park Zoo to UW Campus
I walked from the Woodland Park Zoo to the IW Campus. The Mountaineers map revealed so many cool sights I’d never known about… and I’ve lived here all my life!!

No issues. Beautiful day.
Section 2 Olmstead 75: 8:09 am!! I took the 31 and then the five. I’m realizing I should’ve used the restroom prior to leaving and wish I would have taken the time to make myself coffee. It’s a bit cold this morning!
- Heard some very loud birds in the zoo along the fence. Quite interesting! I wish I knew what they were. I didn’t realize there was a trail along the zoo fence!
- The fallout shelter was amazing. I’m so glad I took the extra time to turn left on eighth, pass by the wayward vegan, and then follow we didn’t place under the freeway overpass. Just as you emerge from under the over path, the fallout shelter is on the right! You can see a giant door with beautiful vines growing around it. There are even some stones placed nearby on which to sit if you choose! Simply fascinating!
- The Cowan Park zip line does not disappoint! Taking a little break to enjoy one of my Homemade health food bars!
- As you pass under the art deco bridge, there really isn’t much art deco to see, except up by the zip line, there’s a beautiful meandering stream - Ravenna Creek - next to the gravel path! It’s very quiet down here, you wouldn’t know you were in the middle of the city! Quite peaceful!
- I passed the Dolemite! It was gorgeous. I had photography plans, but had to rescue the fish and stream wildlife of the sweatshirt, embedded micro plastics that were partially submerged in the river as I passed. Once I finished this task, there was a very chatty group of hikers that I sought to distance from myself! I shall have to come another time to get a proper shot with the illustrious dolomite! It’s pretty cool to go back in time and walk across the Ravenna bridge! This bridge was closed before I was born! Around the time my parents moved to Seattle! The chatty’s are close at hand… I had better get a move on!
- I could hardly believe the two wooden pedestrian bridges! Absolute bliss in the middle of this neighborhood! I was horrified to find someone had dumped a lime bike from the second bridge. The bike landed in the middle of the stream. Knowing quite a bit about the danger of micro plastics and chemicals embedded in E waste, I could not help myself and made a hasty descent to pull the bike out of the stream… At least, as far as I could. Those E bikes are pretty heavy and the grade was quite steep! I managed to drag the bike about 10 to 12 feet back from the stream. I would have liked to have dragged it further, but it was altogether a pretty sketchy operation and I wanted to be careful! I did meet Phineas and Ferb? Two cats in a backpack on the trail. So cool. Texens backpack.
- I found the poem. Beautiful. Reminded me of a dear old friend. Such a wonderful restoration project. Reminds me that this planet doesn’t need us. It will go on in spite of us.
- The next part of the walk, the end of section one and the beginning of section 2, was a little confusing. Luckily, I knew where Ravenna Boulevard was. I did not see the seven café, it might be closed. Winding up around Ravenna Boulevard is always a treat! I saw a candycane Lane, and Marvel at the beautiful old houses on revenue Boulevard!
- I’m now walking on the campus, there’s a very interesting silver sculpture on the right after the William H Gates building. Silvery cervix? It’s dedicated to the Department of forensics morphology or something like that!
- I found the Loyalty Industry Faith and Efficiency pillars! Couldn’t find the duckling ramp though. Once I exited the “copse” of trees, I found I had a 17 minute walk/jog to catch the 31 bus!! My incredibly sore legs somehow got me there in time for the 12:45 bus!! HOORAY!! Finished 12:09!!
