Mount Forgotten

Traverse below peak more challenging and time consuming than expected. Learning lesson: should have checked personal GPS sooner to compare to topo.

  • Road suitable for all vehicles
  • Trail snow free until 4200'.

Descent from meadow to start of traverse below ridge that runs to peak required focused 150' down climb ice ax and step kicking.

Steep slope of hard snow with soft 2-4" top encouraged route exploration upward to 5400' too early on long traverse. Should have maintain 4050-4200' elevation traverse and checked GPS location before exploration to 5400' on challenging steep snow/dirt-rock terrain. Lost 1.5 hours, requiring responsible turnaround before gain base on eastern side rock summit.
