Trip Report

Malcolm & Johnson Peaks

We summited Malcolm Mountain on a winter scramble on 11/15/2015, gaining about 4,000’ in 7 hours. We approached via the more easterly of the trails off the Jungle Creek road, F.S. 9701. The goal was changed to Malcolm from the east peak of Esmeralda in light of conditions after the storm cycle of the preceding days. We had the best weather for many a day, though, when we were exposed to it, there was a biting wind. We found just a thin layer of new snow at Malcolm’s summit; it looked like significant snow stared 500-1000’ higher (6,000-6,500’).
