Malcolm & Johnson Mountains

A long ridge run with two peaks in the western Teanaway. With their relatively low elevation and a very long ridge route, they make for a nice scramble in May through October.

Getting There

Take Exit 85 off of I-90 and head north on SR 970.  Turn left on the Teanaway Road. Continue on the main road as it becomes the North Fork Teanaway River Road to ~0.25 mile past the Beverly Creek Campground.

approach & ascent

Standard Route

6 miles round trip, 2,200 feet of elevation gain, Difficulty: Strenuous 2, Technical 2

Follow Johnson-Medra Trail (No. 1383) to its junction with the Jungle Creek Trail (No. 1383.1). Take the left fork to continue up the Jungle Creek Trail several hundred vertical feet to the saddle and trail junction on the east end of Johnson Mountain. Follow the Way Creek Trail (No. 1235) to west end of Johnson Mountain. An unmaintained trail heads north from here to Malcolm Mountain. Follow the boot path that ascends east on the ridge to the summit.

Loop Route

13 miles round trip, 4,300 feet of elevation gain, Difficulty: Strenuous 3, Technical 2

Hike the Johnson-Medra Trail (No. 1383), taking the bearing right to stay on this trail at it junction with the Jungle Creek Trail (No. 1383.1). Follow the Johnson-Medra Trail north a couple miles to a ridge.  Follow the ridge south towards Johnson Mountain.  Make a side trip up to Malcolm Mountain by ascending the east ridge, then continuing to Johnson Mountain.  Ascend and descend Johnson Mountain via its north ridge.  Then follow the better defined trail south to the junction with the Jungle Creek trail and follow it east back down the valley to the Johnson-Medra Tarilhead.
