Trip Report

Commonwealth Basin

12/26/2014
We deliberately chose a late start for this trip the day after Christmas, not leaving the trailhead until 1pm. Six of us snowshoed up the old PCT route, at times removing our snowshoes due to thin snow on the lower section. Fortunately for us, there had been some new snow the past couple days, and the weather was very pleasant, even some sun!

We stopped for a snack break in the small clearing near the base of Red Mountain, at about 3900 feet, and did a bit of avy beacon lesson and practice. After that it was clear that the light was just starting to fade, so we turned around and headed back, arriving back at the cars by headlamp around 5pm.
