Trip Report

Alpine Scramble - Humpback Mountain

It was a beautiful day out with 7 Mountaineers heading up Humpback Mountain. We choose to take the Northwest route up the mountain.

  • Road recommended for high clearance only
  • It was a sunny day with a few high clouds. Slight breeze. Temps in the mid 60s. Snow on trail started around 2,700 ft. Most of the time it was wet and slick. We used microspikes for the majority of the trip up and down. Around 4,400 we experienced chunks of snow/ice falling from trees and put our helmets on. Approaching the boulders the snow became more consolidated and had some post holing but mostly hard crust.

From Exit 47, we had to park at the Tinkham Rd turnoff due to a road closure (emergency vehicles only), adding 6 extra miles round trip. The road itself was clear, and we did see one SUV make it through to the Humpback Mountain trailhead.

The first 2.5 miles of trail followed a forested ridgeline before opening into a boulder field. About 600 ft below the summit, we turned around due to shallow snow covering the rocks, making safe travel difficult.

We stopped for lunch below the boulder field and then returned the same way. Weather was perfect with great views.

Stats: 9.87 miles, 3,140 ft gain. Time: 8:00 am – 3:00 pm. Great group of Mountaineers!
