Our walk will start inside the Court C entrance. This is on the west side of the mall close to the Regal Movie Theatre where there should be ample free parking. There are restrooms close by. We will first walk round the indoor mall. We will pass a range of different stores including Nordstrom Rack Eddie Bauer, Columbia, Nike and a food court.
Leaving the mall we will follow a path east to the Interurban Trail. Turning north this trail passes under SR18. Then at the intersection with Main Street we will turn east along Main Street to cross the Union Pacific and then the Burlington Northern and Santa Fe railroads to reach Auburn Sounder Train Station. After a look at the station plaza, a short distance further east we will reach the first of 13 outdoor sculptures in the Auburn Downtown Sculpture Gallery. Most of the sculptures are located on sidewalks along or close to Main Street.
Additional places of interest that we will pass include Auburn City Hall, the Postmark Center for the Arts (the town’s original post office building), Auburn Justice Center and Auburn Hospital. This has a cafe and restrooms we can use. There are some interesting historical signs and murals we will see along the way.
The return route follows Main Street back west to the Interurban Tail and then south to the outlet mall. Along the walk I will provide some information on the sites we pass and the history of Auburn. At the end of the walk there will be the option to shop and eat on our own at one of the food stands that include a range of American and continental options.
We will walk in sunshine or in rain. Just under 1 mile will be undercover and the rest outdoors. All the route is flat. There is a road crossing outside the mall entrance and frequent street crossings in the Auburn downtown area. I will give clear instructions in my email and at the start of the walk to make sure we navigate these crossings safely.
Co and Assistant Leaders: Val Ensor will be Co-Leader and Cindy Gholson will be Assistant Leader on this walk.
