At Orcas Landing  we will launch from the dock next to the ferry. We will head west and pass thru pole passage and  continue through the wasp islands to  Yellow Island to explore this stunning Nature Conservancy preserve (approx. 3.5nM). We’ll then take a lunch break and explore the wasp islands before heading  back to Orcas Landing  to catch the 5.15pm ferry back to Anacortes.

One of the Anacortes Ferry’s were damaged approx. 24 hours prior to our trip (so the entire San Juan ferry fleet was now ¾ & our planned ferry run & most of the ferry’s to Orcas island were cancelled for the day of the trip – so we did a quick pivot, all participants wanted to paddle this new/updated plan & opted to paddle to Vendovi island to check out the wildflowers there. The Guemes ferry was unaffected – so we met & caught the 9am ferry from Anacortes to Guemes. We launched from Young County Park North beach crossed to the southern tip of Vendovi (low tide) & travelled along the northern edge  - plentiful tide line sightings of a diverse sea star & resting seals - before landing for lunch & then a walk (0.9 miles one way) to Paintbrush point (impressive wildflowers on the bluff overlook & impressive vistas to the south) we then returned to our kayaks & headed down to circumnavigate Jack Island (counterclockwise) before making it back to our launch (approx. 8 miles paddling & 2 miles walking). It was a great day exploring the Vendovi island preserve & it’s surrounding.
