Sea Kayak - Vancouver Provincial Parks

Multi-day (car-camp-based) sea kayak exploration of Pacific Rim National Park Reserve and Deer Group area islands near Bamfield B.C. - i.e. the South end of Barkley Sound. Base camp at Pachena Bay Campground. For strong paddlers seeking to explore the coast, find great surf, hidden island nooks and rock gardens.

This is another multi-day Gathering. We'll post individual day trips once there and conditions/venues are assessed.

The same Leader's Notes, Style, etc in this other Jan 2026 Hobuck event posted by Tom applies to this Bamfield outing.

In short:

  • Anyone welcome but all who join should have open coast paddling experience, self-rescue and incident management skills.
  • Self-responsibility to assure this Gathering is right for your skill and adventure level. Reach out if you're not sure.
  • Trips will be organized ad-hoc as we see what the conditions are.
  • Day trips will mainly be planned in-person the evening before each paddle day.
  • Dates may change a little depending on conditions.  Individual participation schedules may vary as needed.
  • There is a small possibility this will be shifted to a similar B.C. area (e.g. Tofino), if we see significant advantage in that.

We will have an organizational zoom... a few weeks before to finalize any planning for shared transportation, camping etc.

  • I'm open to bringing someone in my Rivian Truck over the Port Angeles ferry if that works for your schedule.
  • I will send out email when camping reservations open up. They are not available for our target dates yet. Earlier communication with the facility said they typically get posted after the New Year.

Overall:

  • Friday 4/3 - drive up
  • Sat 4/4 thru Mon 4/6 - paddle
  • Tue 4/7 - drive back

Day trips might include:

  1. Pachena Bay itself if the surfing is good there.
  2. Paddle around the Peninsula - with shuttles at Bamfield (and pizza/beer after?).
  3. Deer Group area Island hopping.
