Sea Kayak - Olympic Coast

Most participants will be at Hobuck for the Surf Kayak class.  

We plan to do the car shuttle on the evening of 6/30.  Camp at Hobuck that night and make early start on 7/1.

Paddle down the Washington coast from Hobuck Beach to Ruby Beach.  

The Washington coast is beautiful with spectacular rock formations.  It is also continuously exposed to the open ocean with rocks, reffs, and landings that are always subject to surf.  This five day trip will require good ocean paddling skills, experience around rocks, and good surf landings.

Schedule

• 6/30 - Evening car shuttle
• 7/1 - Hobuck to Ozett, 11nm
• 7/2 - Ozett to Sand Point, 15nm
• 7/3 - To Third Beach, 13nm
• 7/4 - To Mosquito Creek, 8.6nm
• 7/5 - To Ruby Beach, 6.5nm.  Shuttle to Hobuck. Maybe drive home.

Trip Goals-Expectations-Style

Goals:

• Make the trip safely
• Paddle the planned route
• Take time to explore the intricacies of the coast

Expectations:

• Demonstrated ability to kayak camp, paddle in the open ocean, and land through surf
• Steady 3.4 knot pace in ocean conditions.  Sustained paddling into 15 knot wind
• Participate in group decisions
• Abide by decisions made by leader and the group
• Stay together while on the water for mutual support
• Keep food in park approved bear canister
• Dress for immersion and wear helmets

Style:

• Early starts and long days on the water to explore the coast line
• Simpler camps for faster and easier setup and take down
• Consider paddling in a plastic boat
