Sea Kayak - Mercer Island

Trip

Sea Kayak - Mercer Island

Clockwise circumnavigation of Mercer Island.

  • Sea Kayak III
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 12.0 nm

Meet Sunday October 11th at Enatai Beach in Bellevue at 8:00am to allow plenty of time to get ready for our 9am launch.

I expect this sea kayak trip to have this difficulty and these conditions.  View the sea kayak difficulties definitions on the Activity Types page.

  • Difficulty: SK III due to distance and fetch.
  • Wind: 8-10 kts
  • Waves: up to 1 foot.
  • Route: Clockwise around Mercer Island starting and ending at Enatai Beach in Bellevue.
  • Distance:  About 12 nm
  • Pace: Comfortable.

We will launch at Enatai Beach in Bellevue and cross directly over to Mercer Island, following the coastline clockwise around the island and back to our starting point.  There will be four fairly evenly spaced rest stops along the way: Clarke Beach, Groveland Beach, Calkins Landing, and Luther Burbank Park.  This is an urban paddle with lots of interesting landmarks, houses and landscaping to see.  We have spotted river otters and some birds on this trip, however, most Mercer Island wild life tends to settle down before dawn on Sunday. In the event weather conditions are not satisfactory for the circumnavigation, Plan B is to paddle into Mercer Slough and environs, a delightful albeit short trip with lots of critters to see.
