Sea Kayak - Agate Passage

Trip

Sea Kayak - Agate Passage

Explore Agate Passage ebbs/floods, for confident paddlers with a strong low brace recovery.

  • Sea Kayak III+
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 12.6 nm
  • Maximum Wind: 10 kts
  • Maximum Waves: 2 ft
  • Maximum Currents: 4 kts
  • Pace: 3 knots

There is a morning ebb, so we'll meet on the inside at Keyport Marina.

Be on the beach, paddle ready to launch at 9:00am. Short readiness chat before go.

The purpose of this trip is to have fun and improve our skills in dynamic water, exploring eddy lines from the rapid currents through Agate Passage.

This daytime trip is timed purposefully when the moon has fully waxed so there is max ebb and flood thru Agate for the month.

We'll have an early lunch/bathroom break about 11:00 or 11:30am, targeting Old Man House Park (https://goo.gl/maps/sgjyAiq1W5do89C17), timing well with slack at 11:12am.

We'll then play (safely) in the eddy lines from noonish on, as max flood of 4.29 knots at 2:36pm builds.

Key safety considerations will be:

(a.) awareness of motorized boat traffic thru the Passage

(b.) staying away from (typically, downstream of) the bridge abutments (i.e. to the North during the morning ebb; and to the South during the afternoon flood).

Please study the currents map at Agate beforehand:

All participants should have a strong low brace recovery; be comfortable in swirling dynamic water; and be ready to self-rescue or assist-rescue.

Please email me if you have any questions about your readiness.

I may switch this trip to Leader's Permission Required, and edit participants, pending any dialog or feedback.
