Summerland & Panhandle Gap

Trip

Day Hike - Summerland & Panhandle Gap

Begin in old-growth forest, climb up to one of Mount Rainier's most spectacular wildflower meadows, then continue along the highest section of the Wonderland Trail to reach the alpine world of Panhandle Gap. Along the way be alert for marmots and goats, and it is not unusual to see a black bear.

  • Strenuous
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 12.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 2,950 ft
  • High Point Elevation: 6,800 ft
  • Pace: 2.0 mph + 1000 ft/hr

Dependent upon what time the White River Entrance to the park opens. Summerland Trailhead at 7:00am with boots on and ready for hiking.  There is limited parking at this trailhead.

Carpool will meet at US Forest Service Ranger Station, 450 Roosevelt Ave E, Enumclaw, WA 98022 at 5:45am.  I expect riders to compensate their driver at $0.18 mile.  For this trip that would be about $15.00 for roundtrip from Enumclaw to the Summerland Trailhead.

This is a hike to Panhandle Gap and back.

I hike at a moderate pace.  Hiking poles and foot traction may be required depending on snow conditions.  Carpool arrangements and other logistics are forthcoming in the leader's welcome email.
