We'll take the Ptarmigan Ridge trail through incredible terrain as far the Portals at 6,200', overlooking the Sholes and Mazama glaciers. On our return, we will traverse the flowered slopes below Table Mountain to head for the Chain Lakes and exit over Herman Saddle back to the cars at Austin Pass. The trail is rocky in various areas and is almost entirely exposed to the weather. The lakes basin can be notoriously buggy as well. However, the views and the wildflowers can be outstanding!
We will travel at a moderate pace, taking time to enjoy where we are and identify wildflowers. If it is a warm day, we will take a second "lunch" in the afternoon to soak feet and hats in a stream or lake. Expect to be on the trail for 10 hours.

This is the third of three hikes I am offering in the area. I will be staying nearby. There are lodging options in the towns of Glacier, WA and Maple Falls, WA. Camping is usually booked at the forest service campgrounds (Douglas Fir and Silver Fir). There are dispersed campsites at the end of the Hannegan Pass road and along the Canyon Creek Road. Twin Lakes is an amazing camp option but requires a *very* high clearance vehicle.
Wednesday, August 6: Lake Ann/Curtis Glacier
Thursday, August 7: High/Low Pass via Twin Lakes
Friday, August 8: Ptarmigan Ridge/Chain Lakes loop
Meet at the Austin Pass Picnic Area at 8:00 am to consolidate cars.
