Day Hike - Driveway Butte

Day hike to Little Drive, not Driveway Butte, from the beautiful Methow Valley.

  • Strenuous
  • Moderate
  • Mileage: 6.0 mi
  • Elevation Gain: 2,550 ft
  • Pace: on the slow side of moderate

Mid-May should be a perfect time to explore the flower progression along the way to Little Drive, the less traveled summit compared to Driveway Butte, but with less distance, less elevation, less snow to cross, and hopefully less fire-downed trees to clamber over.   Overall, the USFS and Trails Collaborative have been working on this trail in previous seasons, so it is less rough, but still steep and narrow in places.  We will veer off the main trail onto lighter boot built tread at the 4880' elevation, traveling the ridge to the 5557' summit of Little Drive.

Pacing will be on the slow side, partly due to my questionable fitness, and partly to enjoy the close up progression of wildflowers and the distant views.   Trekking poles might be advisable esp for the descent.   Bring plenty of water and sun protection as much of the way will be exposed, and there is only one very small water source we will cross.

This trip is part of my Methow Mountaineers series, aimed at those who either live in or enjoy visiting the Methow Valley.  You might consider camping at the Klipchuck campground the night prior if interested.

Klipchuck campground, Driveway Butte TH at 8:00am.  NW Forest Pass required.  Optional carpooling from Winthrop Red Barn for those interested.
